Some History

At Square Deal Mattress Factory, furniture upholstery has been a part of our business from the very beginning. The cotton and fiber mattresses Ennis was creating and refurbishing in 1920 required the same materials as quality furniture – wood frames, quality padding, durable fabrics, – and the skill to hand-sew a beautiful finish that lasts. As the mattress business grew, Ennis made a home for the upholstery trade in Northern California by offering reupholstery and custom furniture services to the public.

Four generations later, our upholstery department is home to the largest selection of upholstery fabrics in the north state. We specialize in the reupholstery of delicate antique pieces, couch, sectionals, occasional and dining chairs, cushions, and more. Our Acorn Furniture division is dedicated to hand-crafting new custom furniture that lasts a lifetime.

Our Upholstery Estimator’s desk is available Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm, to discuss your project. The lending library is available during all showroom business hours. We look forward to helping you craft the furniture of your dreams!

How it works

1. Come in and check out our fabric selections

  • We have a lending library so you can take the samples home to check them out under your own lighting.
  • Make sure you look at the samples at different times of day and night.
  • If you can not decide or need a larger sample, we can order in a larger loose sample from most companies.
  • We will check the availability of the fabric to ensure it is not backordered and enough of the fabric is available to complete your job.
  • If you plan on using your own fabric, there is a Customer’s Own Material (COM) fee applied for the associated labor. Please provide us photos of your fabric so we can confirm the correct yardage and pattern direction.
  • Once you have decided on the fabric a final estimate for your job will be written up.

2. Measurements & Photos are needed for a quote

    to set up an In-Store Appointment:
    • If you are not comfortable with taking your own measurements, you can bring in the piece(s) and our Upholstery Team can take the necessary information.
    or to set up an In-Home Appointment:
    • With multiple pieces you could set up an appointment for one of our team members to come out and take pictures and measurements at your house. There is a $50 fee for this service that can be credited toward your total once the project is approved.

    3. Estimate Approval

    • After your estimate is finalized you will need to approve and sign the estimate.
    • At the time of signing a deposit of 1/3 the total price is due.
    • The fabric will be ordered at this time to reduce the chances of the fabric being discontinued or back ordered.
    • If there is a specific date or upcoming event you need the job completed by, please double check that it is noted on the final estimate. If the date is not typed on the paperwork it may not get done by that specific date.

    4. Job Start to Completion

    • Furniture Drop off
      • When your job is next in our project queue, we will call you to arrange the drop off of your furniture to our workshop. We also offer pick-up and delivery-back for a small fee if you would like assistance in transporting.
    • Quality craftsmanship takes time. While most jobs can be completed in 1-3 weeks, it is difficult to predict exactly how long each project will take. Therefore, we keep our schedule flexible to ensure our upholsters can do their best work.
      • You will be quoted a month for your piece to be brought in that is estimated based on the current work schedule. Rarely can we give an exact day, but our upholstery team will stay in touch with you regarding your project’s start date during the quoted month.
      • Once we have your furniture, most projects are in our workshop for approximately 2 weeks. Multiple pieces and large sofas may take longer.

    5. Other things to note

    • We order in the fabrics from trusted vendors. However, we have no control over any back orders or shipping time frames.
    • Occasionally, the fabric company will say that a fabric is still available when in fact it has been discontinued or a mill drop that has not yet been updated on their website.
    • If you want to compare prices between fabrics, please ask us for updated pricing. Most fabric companies do not send out sales reps to update their sample book pricing.
